Pastor’s notes
Friends in Christ,
Grace and peace to you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit! - What
does it take for you to “buy into something”, an idea for example? Looking at scripture, some folks
were rather cautious about buying into some of God’s plans; take Moses for example, once God
tracked him down in the desert, it took him several tries, to have Moses sign on the dotted line to
lead God’s people into freedom. Abraham, on the other hand seemed as if he had just been anx-
iously waiting for God to tell him to pack up and move his tribe across the Middle East to settle into a
new homeland. Now, Jonah, that is a whole different story … But honestly, what makes you say; “I
am in!”
For the last year or so, Trinity’s lay and pastoral leadership have been diligently working on
plans that address building needs our lovely, historical church home has. Architects, constructional
engineers, contractors, and consultants were contacted and contracted. All of those deliberations
were done with great care. Our family of faith’s best interest, our mission and ministry were held in
prayer, and placed on our mind as decisions were sought and options evaluated. Just this past Jan-
uary at the council meeting, your pastoral and elected leaders were ready to say “I am in!” Your
leaders were ready to present the congregation at its’ Annual Meeting on 1/21/18 with a plan and a
proposal, that was aiming for high goals ($1.6 million), but as a witness at the meeting, with a fire in
their heart, that I hadn’t seen before in my almost 10 years of ministry at Trinity.
Your overwhelming vote of confidence in the proposal at the Annual Meeting led to the for-
mation of a capital campaign committee, chaired by Jona Schmidt, who brings not just professional
fundraising expertise but a fire in her heart for the cause to the campaign table. Jona went and re-
cruited her leadership team, and I am happy to report that her leadership team is “all in”. They have
been learning, gathering and preparing for our building campaign, and are ready to kick it off on Sat-
urday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15th.
With the help of our very own ELCA Mission Investment Fund, we are keeping consulting
costs low to have more left for the actual improvements and repairs of our beloved but aging church
home. For five weeks, we will be invited to listen to our story of faith and to share in that story
through our financial and personal investment. We will be asked to consider to be “in”. I would like to
invite you to listen to the story presented, to prayerfully discern where you can become a part of the
story, and to wholeheartedly say “I am in!”.
For my family, I can say that Pastor Dirk and I are excited to be invited to be part of Trinity’s
story in this time in history, we are excited to be involved in the capital campaign through a signifi-
cant financial gift. We are in! In those almost past ten years, I have had the privilege to see many
children run with excitement to the chancel area every week for the children’s sermon, to rush for the
jingle change pots every third Sunday, and to fill our historical pews and hallways with laughter,
chatter and noise. Our forefathers and foremothers, have made many sacrifices to leave us a build-
ing that would serve us as a home; to raise our children in faith, to celebrate the milestones in our
life, and to become a beacon of hope in our small college community on the prairies of SD. I was “in”
when God called me to become an exchange student in SD. I was “in” when he called my family to
immigrate to SD. And I am definitely “in” as I am invited to leave my mark on Trinity’s future.
Now, will you join me? Will you say: “I am in!”?

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave
me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in….” Matthew 25:35
The Mission of the Month for April 2018 is “The Gathering.” “The Gathering”
is a time and place in the Madison community when people are invited to
come and share a hot meal and fellowship with one another. This ministry
was started in October 2004, to reach out locally to those in need. Church-
es, businesses and organizations in the area have taken turns since then
serving our community.
The members of the congregation of Trinity have volunteered for sev-
eral years now to annually serve a meal at ”The Gathering.” In May, we will
again be serving the meal in the Fellowship Hall of the United Methodist
Church in Madison. If you and/or your family are interested in serving,
please stop by the office to sign up. Our meal will be catered by DSU Food
Services this year so the time commitment is only 4pm to 7pm on Monday,
May 14, 2018.

St. Dysmas Worship opportunity
Jesus reminds us in Matthew 25:36b, “. . . I was in prison and you visited me. . . and in Matthew
25:40 He reminds us that , “. . . whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did it unto
me.” Those in prison are among those Jesus named as “the least of these”. They were consid-
ered to be the “forgotten fifth” by the first pastor of the St. Dysmas congregation, Pastor Leroy Ise-
minger, because we often do not see them or think of them.
One of the ministries that are supported by the generosity of the members of Trinity Lutheran
Church is St. Dysmas which is a Lutheran congregation that is inside the South Dakota State Peni-
tentiary located in Sioux Falls. All the members are inmates, prisoners. The name St. Dysmas is the
legendary name that was given to the thief on the cross who in Luke 23:42 asked Jesus to, “. . . re-
member me when you come into your kingdom.” St. Dysmas celebrated its 25th anniversary last
year.
At least twice a year, members from Trinity attend worship in the penitentiary Hope Chapel.
The inmate choir, the music, the sharing of the peace, the brief time for fellowship all reflect the mis-
sion statement of the congregation, “HOPE BEYOND BARS”. The men are so appreciative of the
time spent and shared with them. For many in the prison who have no visitors, the opportunity to
talk with and worship alongside someone from the outside is a most welcome gift. It is only in the
Hope Chapel that the inmates are permitted to be called by their Christian names. Pastor Wayne
reports that everywhere else in the penitentiary they are known by their surnames or inmate number.
Those guests who have attended worship in St. Dysmas always report receiving so much
more than we hope to give by our presence at that prison worship. We leave the worship filled with
joy given by the Holy Spirit and the heartfelt thanks expressed by the inmates for our presence.
Sometimes people are reluctant to attend for fear of their own safety. Be assured that the
worship experience is safe. Those who volunteer to attend will complete a Department of Correc-
tions clearance and a waiver. You must be at least 18 years of age. Often there is opportunity to
ride with others traveling to Sioux Falls for the worship. Attendees arrive no later than 6:00 pm and
the worship is generally over 7:30-8:00pm. There is an opportunity to have coffee with Pastor
Wayne and talk about the ministry and your experience after the worship if desired.
The next scheduled date for Trinity to attend the worship is May 31, 2018. If you are interest-
ed in attending the worship opportunity, please contact Ann Marie Rossing (605)256-3851 or
call the church office (605)256-2771. Forms must be filled out and submitted by May 15, 2018
to our church office.
You are encouraged to consider visiting the prison and worship with the “family” of St. Dys-
mas. http://stdysmas.com/

PERSONAL CARE MISSION KITS
Turning Ordinary Items into Extraordinary Gifts
When Lutheran World Relief distributes Personal Care Kits, it is often to people who are dealing with some of
life's most difficult situations -the aftermath of earthquakes and floods, fleeing home to escape violence and
living in extreme poverty. We can’t control when disasters strike and we can’t end poverty overnight, but we
can provide ordinary gifts of comfort to help others know that they haven't been forsaken by the world.
The very simple gesture of giving a Personal Care Kit can give someone the encouragement to begin anew,
starting with a bath. You can share God’s grace and love by providing this simple comfort. Bags are availa-
ble in the Narthex on Sunday mornings and in the church office during the week. Stop by, pick one up and fill
it with items on the list attached to the bag and then return it to the "Lutheran World Relief" bin in the Narthex
by Rally Sunday, September 9 - or anytime before then.
Personal Care Kit contents:
1 light to medium weight bath towel (dark color preferred, max 52"x27”)
3 full-sized bars of soap in original wrappers
1 adult-sized toothbrush in original packaging
1 metal nail clippers (attached file optional)
Note: Wide-toothed combs will be purchased and one will be added to each kit.
If you prefer not to shop and would rather make a donation to cover the cost of a kit, that's fine too! Each Per-
sonal Care Kit is valued at $10. Donations may be left in the church office. Please make checks payable
to: Trinity Lutheran Church, Memo: Mission Kits.
Worship assistants needed
We are in need of your time and talents as a Worship Assistant! Greeters, Lectors,
Communion Assistants, and Ushers are needed.
** Sign-ups are available in the Narthex or by contacting Kate or Lisa in the
church office at
